Aviation Safety and Mental Health

Service Description

Instructor: Jóhann Wíum — Aviation Psychologist Duration: 15 hours, delivered in three five-hour sessions. EAAP Recognition: Half course (pending) - Online Delivery Mental health is increasingly recognised as an important component of aviation safety, operational performance and organisational resilience. This course provides an evidence-informed overview of the relationship between mental health, human performance and aviation safety. Participants explore research on mental health and performance, wellbeing, aviation accidents and rare events with severe consequences, including aircraft-assisted suicide and murder-suicide. The course introduces relevant requirements and guidance from national and international aviation authorities and organisations, including ICAO. Practical topics include aeromedical considerations, peer support programmes, Safety Management Systems (SMS), wellbeing culture and approaches to encouraging help-seeking while maintaining operational safety. Case studies, group work and discussions draw on aviation and other safety-critical industries. Who should attend? The course is particularly suitable for those working with Safety Management Systems, including safety managers, safety officers, operational managers and others responsible for safety oversight and organisational wellbeing. Learning objectives On completion, participants will be able to: Explain how mental health, substance misuse and psychosocial factors affect performance and aviation safety. Identify mental health-related safety risks, including self-harm and rare high-consequence events. Describe aeromedical, regulatory and organisational approaches, including peer support and help-seeking. Apply SMS principles to identify hazards, assess controls and support wellbeing and organisational responses. Listing among the European Association for Aviation Psychology’s (EAAP) recognised courses is pending.
